Male pill invented - no side effects reported Posted by Emma

Scientists in America claim to have invented a male contraceptive pill with no known side effects, after years of trying and failing.

To date the pill has only been tested on mice however scientists are confident that this is the breakthrough they have been waiting for. Unlike previous attempts, the new drug does not contain steriods - said to be responsible for many of the unpleasant and dangerous side effects of previous attempts at the male contraceptive pill.

Researchers at Columbia University say the pill works by impairing the male body's ability to use vitamin A, which is crucial in sperm production. They assert that sperm production will begin again as soon as the pill is stopped.

Dr Debra Wolgemuth, from the university’s medical centre, said: ‘We have seen no side-effects so far, and our mice have been mating [after testing] quite happily.’

Her colleague, Dr Wendy Chung said: ‘An additional benefit of our compound is that it can be taken orally as a pill, avoiding the injection process.

‘It also appears to have a very rapid effect on sperm production and an even more rapid recovery when fertility is desired.

‘We hope that in the not- so-distant future, we may finally have more choices for people.’
