Wandsworth Council has raised the hackles of local residents with its plans to trial a £2.50 entrance fee for children using its high-tech playpark at the weekends.
Parents are calling it a 'tax on fun' and Ken Livingstone, former London Mayor has also publicly criticised the plans.
Mr Livingstone said: 'I believe London’s parks and playgrounds should be free for London’s families and I am deeply concerned at this attempt by the Conservatives to turn publicly-funded playgrounds into areas which only the rich and privileged can enjoy.'
The park, which has supervised facilities for children aged five to 16, costs around £220,000 a year to maintain and a spokesman for the council said the decision to charge has been prompted by the 'difficult economic situation'.
The charges were also needed to pay for more than a dozen staff at the park each weekend and for regular routine maintenance, the spokesman said.
