Telling tales or learning? It's A Mummy's Life

It's A Mummy's Life published this post on 25 April, 2011...

My two girls love each other very much. In fact I think that possibly Tilly loves her big sis more than she loves me. I'm not bitter, I'm pretty happy about it to be honest. But the problem is that when one little person idolises the other, the big one can sometimes get a bit annoyed. As happened today. A bit of a fight broke out, Eliza hit her sister (again), not hard but nevertheless it's wrong. I told her off and she screamed and sulked and went to her room (of her own accord).

This evening just before bed we had this conversation.

"Mummy Milo's been very, very naughty today."

"Milo? Really, what's he done?" Would I need to speak to him again I wondered?

"He hit me. And it really hurt."

"Goodness. Milo, that's really naughty!" Yup I'm talking to the stuffed toy dog again.

"And Mummy?" She said, eyes wide open in disbelief at what she was about to divulge.

"Yes."

"He didn't even say sorry!" Said with as much incredulity and 'grown-upness' as if she'd told me our house had doubled in price.

"Goodness me Eliza, that is really naughty. Did you tell him off?"

"No."

"Oh. Why not?" How unlike her to miss the opportunity to be bossy.

"Because I am his Mummy and I love him."

"Yes but he shouldn't have hit you Eliza, that's wrong." Am I actually talking to a 3 year old in metaphorical terms? Yes, looks like it.

"Ok Mummy. Next time I will put him on the naughty step."

"Yes, because it's naughty to hit people isn't it."

"Yes. And Mummy?"

''Yes?"

"He head-butted me too."

Head-butted? Jesus how does she even know what that is? To cap it all she then demonstrated to me how he head-butted her. I'm left wondering if she has, infact, head-butted her sister. I'm in blissful ignorance right now, although Tilly does have a small bruise on her forehead and I can't for the life of me think when she did it.

But as I recounted this bizarre conversation to my husband he was delighted that she has clearly been thinking about what she did today and realises that a) hitting is wrong and b) it hurts. He was utterly delighted.

I am resigned to the knowledge that Milo will become a very large part of my life.
