The major review by the Lancet medical journal, published today, suggests that many of the 4000 UK babies lost to still birth every year could be saved with increased awareness.

Stillbirth remains very much a taboo subject in this country but around the world there are as many as 3 million stillbirths annually. In the UK it is estimated that 11 sets of parents lose a baby to stillbirth every day.

Neal Long, Sands's chief executive, said the deaths of 11 babies every day "is a national scandal which has persisted for far too long in this country. This seemingly endless death toll of thousands of babies every year has the most terrible long-term impact on parents and their families."

In our video, Erica Stewart, Bereavement Support Manager for SANDS, explains why SANDS always acknowledge the death of a baby and don't like to use medical terms.
