It’s a question that frequently comes up between pregnant women and anxious partners: Will having sex put the baby at risk?
But couples can breathe a sigh of relief. For normal pregnancies, the answer is no, according to a primer on sex in pregnancy published in the edition of the Canadian Medical Association Journal published Monday.
“The bottom line is that sex during pregnancy is generally considered safe,” Dr. Claire Jones, co-author of the article and obstetrician at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, said in an interview.
Sex in low-risk pregnancies is normal and safe, wrote the authors who reviewed and summarized the latest studies, although frequency and sex drive can range widely among women.
Jones said there is still confusion and a number of myths surrounding sex and pregnancy and the authors wanted to dispel those and provide physicians with the most up-to-date information. She also urged patients to raise questions about sex with their health care providers.
