Education secretary Michael Gove is reportedly planning to introduce new rules to prevent parents taking their children out of school for holidays.
Headteachers currently have the power to sanction up to two weeks discretionary absence per pupil each year, in order to give some flexibility to families as they cope with illness, bereavement or bad weather.
However, many heads are put under pressure to grant pupils time off to fit in with their parents' holiday plans.
According to the Sunday Telegraph, Mr Gove intends to ban authorised absences as part of a programme to improve school attendance rates.
