Paul Scholes: My son is autistic Posted by Emma

Former England and Manchester United player Paul Scholes has revealed that his youngest son is autistic.

In an serialisation of his autobiography Scholes: My Story, the retired midfielder speaks about his experience of having a son who suffers from the developmental disorder.

The 36-year-old said the benefits from his career would not mean anything to him without his wife Claire and three children - who he calls his "new generation of Red Devils".

"Aiden suffers from autism and has quite severe learning difficulties, so he can't take part in most sports at the moment, though he does absolutely love his swimming," Scholes says about his six-year-old son.

In our video, Paediatrician Mo Akindolie talks through autistic spectrum disorders, social skills impairments they can cause and when this might become apparent.

Some readers have suggested Scholes is trying to profit from talking about his son's condition and that dealing with an autistic child is just 'one of those things'. Do you agree? Do you think it is important for famous folk to raise the profile of conditions such as autism? Have your say in our Great Debate discussion today...
