Browsing iMama.tv

How do I find a video to watch?

If you know what you're looking for, you can use the 'Ask the Oracle' search facility available at the top of every page. Check out the featured videos in each of the section landing pages, there's always something fresh and interesting to watch. If you know the range of subject matter you are interested in rather than an exact topic, access any of the main sections: Magazine, Know Kids, Grown Up World, Community, Shopping or Surveys from the main navigation menu at the top of every page and browse the channels and videos by stage or topic.

What is a Playlist?

A Playlist is a list of videos that appears in a Channel. They are simply a way to organize content into easy-to-watch categories. Some channels have editorially selected playlists so you can just press ‘Play All’ and sit back and watch.

You can also create your own Playlists and save them to your ‘My iMama’ page. You can create a Playlist of an entire channel’s videos or filter a sub-selection of videos from a channel and save it to watch whenever you have time.

Searching for videos

How can I find a video?

You can enter text in the 'Ask the Oracle' search box at the top of every page e.g. ‘breastfeeding’. Every video clip has been tagged with relevant keywords to help you find what you are looking for. If you want to find videos about “breastfeeding” type the word into the search field – all videos, channels, contributor channels, articles or products that contain the word ‘breastfeeding’ in the title, description or tags will be listed.

If you want to find videos about a certain phrase e.g. ‘ectopic pregnancies”, type the two keywords into the search field and all videos with ‘ectopic’ and ‘pregnancy’ in the title, description or tags will be listed – those that contain both tags will be deemed more relevant and will appear higher in the search results. If you want to find videos that match an exact phrase e.g. ‘ectopic pregnancies’ then you can wrap your keywords with quote marks e.g. “ectopic pregnancy” and only videos that match that exact phrase will appear in your results.

Alternatively, you can browse the channels, sub channels and the playlists within them. You can then use filters to help narrow down your search.

How do I use filters?

When you select a channel, you're presented with a list of videos. To narrow the list down, you can filter by subject, contributor, specialism, stage or topic. Just tick the boxes and select "apply" to refine your search.

iMama.tv Community

How do I find an Organisation or a Group or another User?

You can find a Community Search box on the Community landing page or by going directly to the Community Search page . If you leave the search box and/ or the tick boxes blank, then you will get a full list of Groups, Organisations and Users. If you know who or what you are searching for, just type straight into the box and hit 'find' to get your results.

What is the Support Network?

The Support Network is a comprehensive catalogue of organisations and charities that offer advice, support and inspiration to our members. Our aim is to help you find the right information as quickly as possible so we've categorized them under key subject areas e.g newborn or breastfeeding so they are easy to find and easy to connect to when you need them.

Within the Support Network we have a small group of Featured Organisations. We've been lucky enough to film the experts and advisors at these charities and groups especially for iMama.tv and they cover a wide range of topics and areas we think our users would like more detailed videos about.

What does "Follow" mean?

As a registered member of iMama.tv you can "Follow" any Featured Organisation, Expert, Blogger, Contributor or Team member simply by logging in and selecting the "Follow" button within the relevant page. This means that any activity that takes place on that page, for example Twitter updates, comments, when members join etc…..will get reported within your own Live Feed on your My iMama page. Once you are "following" a Featured Organisation, you can "share" it with any of your iMama friends.

What are Groups and how do they work?

Our Groups are our dedicated discussion boards covering all the areas we think you will want to talk about - from pregnancy through to weaning, from great debates to rant corner. We want to hear from you. Newest discussions topics are displayed first in Groups but posts within those topics are displayed in chronological order. Once you have joined a Group, you can invite your iMama friends to join too.

Can I create my own Group?

Yes you can, all you need to do is follow these easy steps;

Why are some Groups private?

Because some subjects are more sensitive than others, we want to give our members a place to talk in confidence if they prefer this. So when you create a Group, there is a Privacy setting to make the Group private. Private groups are by invitation only. Whilst all members might be able to find your Group via Search or Live Feeds, only members you invite to "join" can view and add topics and discussion posts.

Do i have to be registered & logged in to take part in discussions?

Yes you will need to register and be logged in to take part in discussions. Some Groups are of a sensitive nature so you will need to join the Group to post.

What's the difference between Comments and Discussions?

Discussion boards can be found within Groups in Community - these allow for multiple threaded posts around a certain topics that have been created by either iMama team members or by other registered members of the community.

Comments on the other hand can be added to a specific videos player page or to a Featured Organisations page. Comments enable members to post their thoughts specifically about that video or Organisation - these are not threaded detailed discussions but rather short snappy comments?

Will the discussions be moderated and what does this mean?

Yes all comments and discussions are post moderated. We want to allow our members a platform for debate and discussion but we also want to make sure our community remains inclusive and welcoming to all. However if any member comes across something that makes them feel uneasy or uncomfortable, they can use the "report this" function.

How do I add a video to one of my discussion posts?

It's easy to embed a video from iMama.tv into a discussion post. Simply select the 'share' icon within the video Player for a video of your choice, select the Permalink option - copy the link. then paste this link in to your discussion post. When you hit "Submit post" the video will be embedded directly in to your discussion thread.

What is a Live Feed?

Throughout the Community section there are a number of Live Feeds - these are simply digests of current activity taking place. The Community Live Feed summarises who has joined what Groups or who is now following which Organisations or Contributors. The Organisations Live Feed summaries their latest Twitter or Blog activity as well as which members have joined or commented. And a Users Live Feed summarises the activity of that User, their friends and of any Groups they have joined or Organisations and Contributors that they are following.

Who are you filming and how are you finding them?

We are filming a multitude of women from all walks of life. Every mums experience is different and we are committed to showing as broad a spectrum of experience as possible though of course we've started mainly with women we know as we already have a high level of trust so have been able to get full and frank interviews with them. Everyone involved Speaking from a first hand point of view. You might not agree with it – but you can absolutely trust where it’s coming from.

We find women to film through our development panel, contacts with charities and organisations helping parents and our own network of friends, family and associates. We are always on the look out for new people to film so if you would like to be on the site do let us know by emailing hello@imama.tv

Who are the Contributors and Experts?

All of our interviewees are referred to as Contributors, most are pregnant women & mums of babies and toddlers, some are experts in the field of midwifery, paediatrics, gynaecology etc. Each contributor has a profile page so that we can get to know them better – simply find their name alongside the video’s title and description to access their profile.

Why are the iMama.tv Team and their kids on the site?

In the spirit of trust and openness, we are happy to share the details of our own child bearing and rearing experiences – how else could we expect other mums to contribute honestly and openly about parenting? We are totally Mum to Mum – there is absolutely no difference between those who run the site, those who contribute and those who view – we are all in it together.

Why do you have both parents and experts on the site?

We believe that no single viewpoint or experience is the right one. By filming a variety of experts and a variety of mums answering the same question, you get to hear a range of answers from people with different qualifications and backgrounds. We provide you with the relevant background information about each contributor. You can use your own judgement about what you feel might be the right thing for you and your family.

How do we know your interviewees are not paid to mention products?

Our main priority is to ensure you get the information you trust and need and we don’t believe that necessarily comes from the highest bidder. Our editorial teams and our commercial team work separately.

All our contributors and interviewees have to sign a contract stating they are not paid or sponsored by anyone when they give an interview. If they are (for example if they come to us from a commercial organisation) we make this clear and transparent in the Contributor information next to each of their clips.

However, if a Contributor has used a product and found it helpful, we want them to be able to pass that information onto you just as your friends would. So in the same way you might decide you like a Contributor’s take on feeding or discipline for a child, you might choose to take up their advice on which type of buggy to use.

And we’ve taken things a step further: when we were having our first children, it drove us mad hearing about products we thought sounded great, but found a nightmare to get hold of. So wherever possible we’ve made it a one click process for you to access a product you like the sound of, if recommended by a mum or expert whom you resonate with.
